Know Thy Enemy
Boise State looks to finish off the weekend on the coast with a winning record as they take on the Colorado Buffalos in the Myrtle Beach Invitational fifth place match up Sunday evening!
Colorado has had a funny season this far. In games where they are the favorite, they have lost, including their opening game of this weekend against UMass. But then, in games where they are the underdog they have come out on top, case in point, on Friday they absolutely rolled #24 ranked Texas A&M 103-75. Colorado is 2-0 against top-25 teams with wins over Texas A&M as well as #11 Tennessee.
The Buffalos were on fire last time out, hitting 16 from “downtown” and 40 points from their bench in the win. Colorado is led by sophomore guard KJ Simpson who is averaging over 19 points per game and scored a career-best 30 points in their last win. The Buffs seem to rely on their offense to win games as they have scored at least 78 in all three of their wins.
Coach Tad Boyle has been the head coach of the Buffs for 13 seasons. In his time leading the program, Colorado is 245-155. He ranks second in school history in both wins and winning percentage. He’s led the Buffaloes to five NCAA tournament appearances and holds nine of the 13 20-plus win seasons in program history.
What Happened Last Time
Sunday will mark the first time these two teams have met on the Hardwood
Player to Watch
UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO
SO., KJ SIMPSON, G #2
There really isn’t any other player to watch other than #2 in black and gold. The reigning Pac-12 player of the week is looking to claim his second straight honor with this play this weekend. So far in the tournament Simpson is averaging 21.5 points, seven rebounds and is a perfect 7 for 7 from the line. Simpson will be the reason the Buffs win or lose on Sunday.
BOISE STATE
FIFTH YEAR., MARCUS SHAVER JR, G #10
The fifth year senior from Phoenix, AZ is quietly almost averaging a double-double so far this season. Shaver has stepped into the primary point guard position for the Broncos this season and is doing a great job so far. Known for this “Big Shot Shave” from a year ago Shaver is the go-to guy in clutch time for Boise State. He and Simpson will go back and fourth Sunday and whoever has a better game, their team will more than likely win.

Rev's Route to a Bronco Win
Sealed Tight
Boise State’s defense has been down right suffocating this season. The Broncos have allowed fewer and fewer points as the season has gone on. Last time out against Loyola they only allowed 48 points! Sunday will more than likely be the toughest test they have had to-date this season in a high octane Colorado Buffaloes offense. If Boise State is going to win they have to make this game a defensive “rock fight,” as Coach Rice likes to call it and not allow this game to get into the high 70’s.
Share The Love
Friday night’s win was a beautiful display of sharing the ball and making the “extra” pass. The Broncos had 11 assistants on 24 made baskets. Making the extra pass might allow the Broncos to find wide open shooters like they did in Chibuzo Agbo who scored a career-high 24 points and five made three pointers last time out.
Editor Note:
Finish Strong
Coach Rice historically likes to start the season with a tough schedule that builds the character of the team as they head into the grind of Mountain West play. Sunday will be another opportunity to play a very quality opponent, an opponent who should be in the NCAA tournament mix again this season. Sunday is a chance for a signature win that will boost the resume come tournament time.
Boise State grinds the Buffs to a halt in a defensive slugfest.
