Know Thy Enemy
The Broncos head east to the “Redneck Riviera” with their invitation to the Myrtle Beach Invitational on the campus of Coastal Carolina this weekend. Boise State, confident after their double-digit win against Washington State last Saturday, now turn their attention to the Charlotte 49ers.
The 49ers are coming off of a convincing win on Monday when they played host to Maryland Eastern Shore. The 49ers, 2-0, are looking to build off their solid campaign from a year ago when they won the most games since the 2012-2013 season. Charlotte is largely a new look squad featuring six newcomers, including four transfers from Division I programs. Highlighted by grad transfers Josh Aldrich and Tre' Gipson, followed by sophomore's Lu'Cye Patterson and Igor Milicic Jr. However, what will hold this team together is returning starter, junior, Jackson Treadgill.
What Happened Last Time
Thursday night will be the first meeting between these two schools in program history.
Player to Watch
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA-CHARLOTTE
JR., JACKSON THREADGILL, G #12
The Junior from Concord, NC will be relied on to make a big leap this year from a year ago. Last season Threadgill played just under 25 minutes per game and averaged just under 6 points per game. So far this season Jackson is averaging over 30 minutes per game and is in double figures in the points column. Threadgill along with the rest of the squad are coming into this stretch of games a confident bunch after two convincing wins to start the season.
BOISE STATE
FIFTH YEAR., NAJE SMITH, F #23
Every good team has that spark plug that comes off the bench and Boise State has Naje Smith. The fifth year senior from Spokane, WA has done nothing but provide solid minutes and production at the Broncos sixth man this year. In two games Smith is averaging 4.5 rebounds and 12 points in 32.5 minutes. Last time out Smith was on the receiving end of a monster alley-oop from Marcus Shaver that really energized the crowd and got the team going. With playing three games in four days, Smith as well as the rest of the Broncos bench will have to be at their best.
PROBABLE STARTERS
Boise State
WASHINGTON STATE
Rev's Route to a Bronco Win
Second Chance
Last Saturday against WSU Boise State gave up 14 offensive rebounds and 17 second chance points to the Cougs. Comparatively the Broncos only had six offensive boards and 5 second change points. Boise State will have to limit the 49ers ability to get offensive rebounds and force them to only get one shot per possession.
Buckets from the Bench
In tournament style play, the teams that have the deepest bench usually win. In their first game of the season Boise State rotated nine guys and last saturday their rotation was only 7. Out of the reserves Naje Smith is far and away the most productive member. Whether it is Kuzmanovic, NgaNga, or Whiting The Broncos have to get someone other than Smith to step up and produce
Editor Note:
Who’s Next?
With this being an in season tournament Boise State’s second round opponent could either be Tulsa or Loyola-Chicago. The Broncos beat Tulsa a season ago and Loyola-Chicago came to Boise in 2017.
Tourney Time
Boise State has played in three of these early season tournaments in the last four seasons. In those tournaments the Broncos are 6-4, but most of the time they are on the “losers” side of the bracket. If Boise State can win on Thursday it will give them a chance to compete for some hardware.
The Broncos had a close loss against a good Jackrabbits team and beat a Pac12 team in Washington State by 10. I think both of those games will help them as they face a stacked field of teams this weekend. The Broncos keep the winning going.
Boise State 66, Charlotte 59
